Southern California's most prestigious film festival of its kind launches the celebration of Asian Pacific Heritage Month at the Director's Guild of America.

With categories from comedy and drama to shorts and documentaries, the 23rd edition of this week long festival shares the stories of Asian Pacifics in America and abroad.

Free community screening of The Center for Asian American Media Fund Project NEW YEAR BABY, an award-winning documentary by Socheata Poeuv. Co-presented by ITVS Community Cinema and the Oakland Asian Cultural Center.

Born in a Thai refugee camp on Cambodian New Year, filmmaker Socheata Poeuv grew up in the United States never knowing that her family had survived the Khmer Rouge genocide. In NEW YEAR BABY, she embarks on a journey to Cambodia in search of the truth and why her family's history had been buried in secrecy for so long.

  Somei Yoshino Taiko Ensemble Headlines Satsuki Arts Festival and Bazaar
Please join us for the major fund-raiser of the Berkeley Buddhist Temple at 2121 Channing Way in Berkeley, Saturday, May 17 from 4 PM to 9 PM and Sunday, May 18 from 12 noon to 7 PM. The free entertainment will be from 12 noon to 5 PM on May 18.

Somei Yoshino Taiko Ensemble (SYTE), which was founded in 1999, goes beyond the sounds of the taiko drum to use music, theater and dance as a medium to express the human condition as it relates to its environment, community and its future. The ensemble has toured throughout California and nationally and has performed at many major music and performing arts venues including Popejoy Hall in Albuquerque, N.M., Kingsbury Hall in Salt Lake City, Utah, and the Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts. Since 2003, the ensemble has performed to packed audiences in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Arizona, Utah and New Mexico.
